Swimming pool in Hackney

The London Fields Lido is a popular outdoor swimming pool in the heart of the vibrant neighborhood of Hackney in East London, England. It is located within the London Fields Park, a green oasis that provides residents of the metropolis with a welcome escape from the urban hustle and bustle. This historic swimming pool, built in the 1930s, is one of the few remaining lidos – the British term for public outdoor swimming pools – in London, combining nostalgic charm with modern functionality. It is a meeting point for swimmers, sunbathers, and families looking to enjoy a relaxing day outdoors.

Historic lido in London

Originally opened in 1932 as part of a wave of outdoor swimming pools that emerged in Britain during the interwar period to provide affordable leisure opportunities for the population, the Lido reflects the aesthetics of that time with its Art Deco style and distinctive red brick architecture. However, after decades of operation, it closed in 1988 due to budget cuts and structural decay. A dedicated campaign by the local community led to the Lido reopening in 2006 after extensive renovations. Today, it shines in its renewed glory, serving as a symbol of residents' efforts to preserve their history and public space.

London Fields Park leisure activities

The swimming pool itself is the focal point of the facility: a 50-meter long Olympic-standard pool, heated year-round to provide an inviting water temperature even during cooler months. This heating sets it apart from many other outdoor pools in Britain, making it particularly attractive to swimmers looking to train regularly for fitness, competition, or relaxation. The clear turquoise water is surrounded by a concrete edge equipped with sun loungers and seating areas, allowing visitors to sunbathe or relax between swimming sessions. In addition to the main pool, there is a smaller area for children, although modest in size, as the focus is on adult swimming.

Community atmosphere in London

The atmosphere at the London Fields Lido is relaxed and communal. During the summer months, the grounds are filled with people picnicking, reading, or simply enjoying the sun, often accompanied by music from portable speakers. The adjacent London Fields Park enhances this sense of leisure and freedom, with its meadows, trees, and a popular weekly market offering local products. In the winter, it becomes quieter but no less lively – here, one can encounter dedicated swimmers doing laps even in cold or rainy weather, often enveloped in steam rising from the warm water.

Heated swimming pool for families

The facilities at the Lido are functional and modern, without losing their historical character. There are heated changing rooms and showers that enhance comfort, as well as lockers for personal belongings. A small café at the entrance serves coffee, tea, sandwiches, and snacks, although many visitors bring their own food to spend the day by the water. The facility is designed to be accessible, with ramps and special changing areas to accommodate people with limited mobility. However, dogs are not allowed to ensure cleanliness and safety.

The London Fields Lido is more than just a swimming pool – it is a cultural and social hub. It reflects the multicultural character of Hackney, where people of diverse backgrounds come together. Regular events take place here, such as swimming lessons, fitness programs, or special events like midnight swims under the stars, creating a magical atmosphere. For many residents, it is a place of routine and retreat, while visitors from other parts of London or beyond appreciate the combination of urban life and nature-based relaxation.

The surroundings of the Lido add to its charm. London Fields Park is known for its relaxed hipster atmosphere, with cyclists, picnic groups, and occasional cricket games. Nearby, trendy cafes, pubs, and the Broadway Market lure with culinary offerings that complement the experience. Nevertheless, the Lido itself remains a place of tranquility, offering a rare opportunity to slow down amidst the bustling capital.

Great place for a swim. Friendly staff on the desk too. Water and showers were nice and warm and pool not too crowded which is unusual at this time of year. I'm expecting it to get busy on the first Monday of the year when it's usually a seething pool of resolution...

Hi London Fields Lido...... I just popped in to say hi. I now live in the Midlands, but I was born in Dalston. As kids, the Lido was one of our favouritist places to go to. We would pay our pennies to go in, get our ticket and run to the little changing rooms with their wooden doors, on pool side to get changed, it was a race as to who could get changed first. Although I don't know why because the boys would always win, running and jumping in splashing us girls and making us scream because it was so cold! I'm not joking when I say that water was at least -10⁰ 😅 how none of us were hyperthermic when we got out I don't know? You never saw the adults in there, or at least not for long. They weren't stupid.. 🤣😂🤣 Some of my happiest childhood memories were made in that pool, that park and that swing park... on the highest slide, that most definitely wouldn't be legal these days! It was incredible.. I'm 58 now and I'm talking about 48 years ago at least lol. I still have the scars on my knees from the scratchy sharp floor of the pool, it was like walking on Artex is was so sharp .. I'm sure there would have been tons of kids who lost skin on that stuff.. 😂🤣 Anyway, I just wanted to say.. I'm so glad such an icon is still going strong, I'm sure it's been difficult staying afloat.. 🤣😂🤣 sorry, no pun intended.. maybe next time I come home, I'll come for a splash around and come and check out your snazzy hot showers, such luxury, lol. And bring the grandkiddlies to. ... Have you changed that horrid pool floor? I don't want them scraping their knees lol ... 😉😘 xx

The pool is lovely. But what ever you do do not order any food from the cafe. I ordered a cheese toastie and waited 30 minutes for a toastie whilst the girl stood making bagels to put in the fridge. The 3 girls behind the counter all teenagers with not a clue. So rude no customer service no sorry for the wait. I asked for my money back they refused never again. One girl told me I hadn’t waited half an hour when I had the transaction on my phone and she wasn’t even in the cafe when I ordered vile customer service. Laughed in my face as well absolutely disgraceful. I had ordered 2 bagels also which she had served me 20 minutes before the toastie so just stood there waiting for my child’s sandwich. The pool itself is lovely if defo go again but won’t be eating or buying a drink there

It was my first visit this week. I've been wanting to come for over a year and finally made it and so happy I did. What a gorgeous oasis here in East London. Super friendly staff who work hard to keep everyone safe and feel welcomed. Looking forward to my next visit.

The -2 stars is really just for the lifeguard who was on duty in the tower between 16:30-17 on 12th of Aug, aka hottest day of the year. This guy (or gal) sat there staring out into space while 3 youths jumped into the middle of the fast lap lane, standing there as if it were their own family pool, with no regard for the dozens of people swimming in that lane that they were actively blocking. They proceed to have some chats and hang out there until someone yells at them in the lane to get out (thank God) and then eventually after a few minutes, walks into the next lane over. Whoever was on duty needs to get retrained on what their job entails, which definitely includes telling these kids to get out, especially when it's happening just beside him/her. The pool would also benefit from having some signs that say "do not enter" along the sides, which, while many would consider common sense, apparently isn't when it's a hot day.

The enclosed Lido is a world of its own--water, tilestones, and sky, the same trees as on the Fields, but no suggestion of grass. Many swimmers are regulars; the system works well; there are lanes and a zone for children and families.
