Hmmm - impressing church. But why on earth charge full entry price -16 GBP- when the Rubens painting is not to be seen due to renovation work in the church and a couple of other buildings are closed?

The chapel has outstanding acoustics. The staff are friendly, respectful and helpful. The organist and choir have well deserved international reputations for excellence. The building and grounds are well maintained to a high level of historical preservation and kept in very good condition.

A King’s College Chapel data de 1446, e possui o maior teto abobadado do mundo, entalhes incríveis, e magníficos vitrais, dentre os que restaram no país. Depois da fundação, outros monarcas deram continuidade à construção, mesmo em períodos de guerra. Os reis Henry VII e Henry VIII, da dinastia Tudor, patrocinaram a conclusão da igreja, e em 1515 a estrutura principal estava completa. A maior parte dos trabalhos nos vitrais foi feita no reinado de Henry VIII. Fico sempre impressionada com a habilidade dos artesãos/artistas que dedicam anos a cada detalhe de uma construção, religiosa ou não, mas é fato que no caso das igrejas, o objetivo de impressionar parece ser o grande motivador. É como se se quisesse evocar a grandeza da divindade, e essa igreja consegue isso. Impossível não se sensibilizar.

The college is charging £16 (as of Oct 2024) to see the chapel and claims you "are free to wonder the grounds". The latter statement is false, as you are only allowed to go on a single path, and about 2/3 of the grounds are blocked. The chapel is interesting but totally overpriced for what you get to see. There are no toilets available for the visitors as far as I could find. Sad to see a college with quarter of a billion endowment jacking up prices to scalp the visitors. Better spend the money to see truly remarkable cathedrals like the one in Salisbury.

Inevitably very busy with tourists - of whom I was one! - but no less impressive for all that. The mind boggles at how much work went into the architectural splendour of this building.
