Best to see it from both street level and city wall angle. Both stunning to see at different time of day.

Beautifully designed clock, added to the Eastgate in 1899 in celebration of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. The ornate metalwork, bright colours and commanding position make it one of Chester's most recognisable landmarks. To walk beneath the clock you'll need to make your way up on to the city walls.

This place is a highlight of visiting Chester. It may only be small, but its design and location are striking. It's possible to climb up to the clock itself from a stairwell immediately next to it. However, the steps are steep. Access can also be gained from other access points on The City Walls. The views from atop the bridge are very nice.

The clock is positioned atop the historic Eastgate arch in Chester. The clock was commissioned in 1897 to commemorate he 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign. Its official unveiling took place in 1899, marking the Queen’s 80th birthday. Designed by John Douglas, the clock showcases intricate Victorian-style ironwork and exquisite detailing. The clock tower itself was constructed in the Victorian Gothic Revival style, characterized by elaborate iron decorations and gilded accents that enhance its grandeur. Each of the four sides of the tower features a clock face, ensuring visibility from all directions within Chester’s city center. The arch beneath the clock stands on the site of the original Roman gateway, which once served as an entrance to the ancient city. Today, it remains an integral part of Chester’s city walls, preserving the historical continuity of the site.

A beautiful historic landmark in the glorious City of Chester. It’s free to visit and you can walk under and over it as part of a walk around the city walls (all free). The clock is still active and it’s believed to be one of the most photographed clocks in the world. 🌎

It was nice to climb up and go closer to the clock, and see it quite close up. A very nice antique piece, and free of charge

Great views up and down of Chester and its history. Apparently the second most viewed clock in England behind Big Ben. Clean sores and not many people waiting to take photos.

This is really a review for Huxley's coffee shop located right by the clock on the walls. Found it by accident while shopping, which was nice because it felt like you had found a little secret place of your own. I only had a drink but family I was with had cake as well and found it really tasty. Staff were lovely and helpful. They also sell their own craft beer, so got some that was already in a nice gift box for a Christmas present. There's an interesting porthole window looking out over the main street which was interesting. I would highly recommend Huxley's if you are looking for a nice little coffee shop out of the way.

Fantastic to get close up to the clock via the city wall walk. With great views of the shopping areas.
