Exactly What You Imagine a British Museum to Be — And More
The Pitt Rivers Museum is absolutely incredible — it’s everything you’d picture a classic British museum to be. The space is packed (in the best way) with countless glass cases filled with artifacts from all over the world. You’ll find everything from religious icons and musical instruments to smoking devices and ancient tools — it’s a true treasure trove of human history and culture.
What makes this museum so special is how dense and wonderfully chaotic it feels. Every case offers something unexpected, and you can easily lose yourself wandering around for a solid hour (or more) without even realizing it. There’s this amazing sense of discovery, like you’re exploring a Victorian-era collection of curiosities.
If you love museums that feel rich, atmospheric, and full of stories, the Pitt Rivers is an absolute must. You won’t want to leave!

Another victoriana delight. Not so many drawers to open than in the past

Loads and loads and loads of artefacts. Feels like some rich hoarder’s warehouse (complimentary) because there’s just so much stuff! There were objects about many topics and events like marriage, coming of age, festivals and more. There was even this massive canoe hung on the rails which was really cool, but the density of the exhibited items kind of make you wish you had more space.

Tragically this once great centre of learning has been targeted by ignorant revisionist anglophobes - many of them can be found in this reviews section, lamenting supposed "colonialism" and throwing around words like "stolen" and "repatriation", evidencing their complete ignorance of Pitt Rivers and how he legitimately created his collection and why.
By far the most fascinating display - the shrunken heads - have long since been removed with vacuous excuses about stereotypes and racism. Denying everyone the chance to see amazing historic artefacts because of a tiny, moaning minority of righteous snowflakes amongst us. Why this has been allowed to happen is beyond me - will the mummies in the Ashmolean be removed next?
Worse, the museum now displays large woke messaging, presumably paid for and written by some hateful, Marxist, critical-race-theory graduate, bemoaning the collection and "colonialism", and waxing on about "decolonising" and other such inventions. A waste of space that could be used to display the thousands of items the museum has stashed away in storage.
My review will not change until the shrunken heads are reinstated and the racist, anti-British, woke propaganda is removed.

Fantastic place and great for families. There’s enough to keep all ages occupied and we really appreciated the effort they made to add informative half term activities for children. My son really enjoyed the little treasure hunt game and actually learned something along the way.

A tantalising and fascinating collection. It felt like an over-furnished dolls house. I quite liked the display of exhibits being, mainly, grouped as item types. So intrigued, I never got to the upper level so I will have to go back.

Really impressive museum. A wide variety of artefacts collected from all over the world, so you would need at least two hours to pass everything. I recommend to take a look also in the small shop, cool goodies are to be seen there.
Excellent place for both small and big visitors
