Excellent 3 hours spent here, well laid out, and a treat for our grandson to get up close to the trains. Bit pricey in the cafe but no admission fee to the attraction, voluntary donation. There is plenty of free parking too!

Excellent museum for train enthusiasts and those with children. It is free but accepts donations. Children's activities, books and toys to keep young children entertained. There was a craft station as well. We came during half term, so don't know if the robot coding activity is always there, but it was very good. Toilet facilities with baby changing. There is a train workshop with an area for viewing. You cannot go inside all but one of the trains, but lots of steps to peer inside, including Queen Alexandra's bed, however there was one train where there was a manned talk at the front of the train. Cafe on site, or picnic tables inside and outside next to a children's playgroup. Lots of free parking available. The staff we interacted with were friendly. The museum consisted of two buildings and all was pushchair and wheel chair friendly (although to peer into the trains it was mostly via steps) There might have been a paid train ride but we did not experience it. Great place to spend 1.5-3 hours.

Just purely on the museum itself. It was very good. 2 big hangers of trains and wagons. Takes a fair while to go round. It's a free museum but you can leave a donation. (My gripe is the cafe which is hideously expensive. Over £5 for a pre packaged sandwich and about £3 for a sausage roll. You can bring your own picnic in however.)

I am quite local to the museum so walked up the path adjacent to the railway line. Sat down to have a coffee and look at the magnificent engineering heritage on display. Shows how our country was at the forefront of the industrial revolution. Sadly it is no longer in this position. But the museum is well worth the visit, staff are friendly and helpful, food and drink are available. It is free to enter, but you can donate to help. Also there is a shop selling toys and memorabilure.

You really can't argue with a free entry museum, but I was compelled to make a contribution by how fantastic this facility is. Lots of rail history on display; an incredible number of locomotives and rolling stock available to get up close and personal with across both halls. Especially of interest are the pioneers and experimental stuff, such as APT-E. What really stands out is the cleanliness of the place; everything is absolutely immaculate! All the staff and volunteers we encountered were helpful and friendly too. Maybe one improvement would be to see more of the interiors of units such as APT-E and LEV1, even if it's just being able to look in from outside with lit interiors for example. I am sure that's something that may come in the future, given the amount of work being put in here. Highly recommended for everyone, not just rail enthusiasts. Everyone can be impressed by the scale and engineering of rail vehicles!

Lovely large bright (and warm) sheds with a collection of engines and rolling stock. Not a huge amount of info panels, but enough to give some background without slowing down the experience. Easily a good couple of hours. Nice cafe too.

Great place to visit in the North East on a cold or rainy day with the kids. Linked to the National Railway Museum York. Some fantastic trains, and a whole new shed added just recently, plenty of activities inside and it’s free to enter, donations are welcomed.
