Totempfahl in Muirkirk besuchen

Der Muirkirk Totempfahl ist ein markantes Kunstwerk in der schottischen Gemeinde Muirkirk, gelegen im Verwaltungsbezirk East Ayrshire. Er befindet sich im sogenannten "Heritage Layby", einem Rastplatz am westlichen Ende des Dorfes entlang der A70. Dieser Totempfahl begrüßt Besucher, die aus Richtung Cumnock nach Muirkirk kommen.

Kunstwerk im Heritage Layby

Das Kunstwerk wurde im Jahr 2006 offiziell eingeweiht. Die Gestaltung des Totempfahls ist das Ergebnis einer Zusammenarbeit mit Schülern der Muirkirk Primary School, die die verschiedenen Paneele entworfen haben. Diese Paneele zeigen geschnitzte Darstellungen von Greifvögeln, die in der Region heimisch sind, sowie Szenen, die die historische und moderne Entwicklung von Muirkirk widerspiegeln.

Muirkirk lokale Geschichte erkunden

Neben dem Totempfahl im Heritage Layby gibt es in der Gemeinde zwei weitere Totempfähle: einen am Eingang zu Garronhill, ebenfalls in Muirkirk, und einen weiteren am Glenbuck Loch. Jeder dieser Totempfähle ist individuell gestaltet und thematisiert unterschiedliche Aspekte der lokalen Geschichte und Kultur.

Stopped off for a coffee from the little catering van, lovely couple, very friendly and nice food. Great Little picnic benches and plenty of space to park

It's a great way to spend time just walking around the garden's and picnic area , also has a great snack van next to the layby for parking

It was definitely a fine looking pole, certainly the best totem pole to my knowledge in the area. Unfortunately no facilities at the pole loses it a star. A must visit if in Scotland though

Located in Muirkirk's Heritage Layby, an unusual tourist attraction in the shape of a native American style Totem Pole marking the entrance to the village on Smallburn Road, the A70. The inauguration of this impressive big pole was on Friday 21st April 2006. The children of Muirkirk Primary school designed the Totem Pole, the bottom panel says "Muirkirk Primary 2005" Other panels depicts birds of prey seen locally and depictions of Muirkirk people and history. At the top is a heron in flight wings spread wide. Nearby is a sculpture of a plough, a pyramid cairn memorial to the covenanters and history boards telling the story of the village.
