It is more than a decade since I visited Dunoon and time has not treated this once couthy resort town well. In the sixties, my granny would spend a couple of weeks there in the summer and visits to the town were frequent in the decade, when various family members were participating in running and jumping athletics events at the Cowal Highland games. The buildings on the once-marvellous Victorian pier have been allowed to fall into rack and ruin, giving you a very bad impression right from the off. Walking up Argyll Street is similarly depressing, with countless run-down and unoccupied shops adding to the impression that the town is really struggling for survival. Indeed, many of them have had a notice from the proprietor of a local enterprise almost pleading with the owners to do something about the sorry state of their property. Although I had been recommended to take lunch in the Lorne, the outside is, like much of the town, nothing to write home about. BUT..... The inside is a revelation. It really is extraordinary. From dilapidated to delightful, the contrast between the exterior and the interior is jaw-dropping. Everything about the Lorne is absolutely smashing, with well-trained, friendly and helpful staff, keen to make you feel at home. Although there is an extensive menu, I decided to opt for one of the specials on the blackboard, a soup and sandwiches combo for £9.95 plus a pot of tea for £2.90. The soup was home-made and extremely tasty; the minute steak toasted sandwich and fries served alongside it in hardly any time at all. The toilet, like the rest of the establishment was sparklingly clean. When the time came to return to the pier to catch a ferry across the Clyde, the staff were more than happy to summon a taxi to the door within minutes.

Visited the Lorne for dinner on a cold, wet Monday evening. We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown to a table where the serving staff explained what the soup of the day was and what specials were on that day. We ordered Cullen Skink and Haggis & black pudding bon bons as starters then the sirloin steak special for mains, which included a bottle of wine. The lady serving was cheerful, friendly and accommodating at all times and the food arrived promptly and was absolutely delicious. I have given 5 stars for food, service and atmosphere and if I could give 5 Michelin stars I would give them too. Overall it was a fantastic meal and I would highly recommend the Lorne to anyone looking for a restaurant in Dunoon.

The six of us booked a table for our Christmas lunch; it was not a disappointment. Fabulous food, great service and very good value for money… it’s been a long time since I had such a fabulous Christmas meal. The panna cotta (with a wonderful wobble, I might add!) was to die for. In all we six had a great time and will be back on a more frequent basis. Thanks to all the staff at The Lorne!

The most burnt puff pastry you'll find, not even edible. Service was okay, staff walking away before you're even finished asking what you want. Nowhere near worth the money paid. Disappointing.

Had a fantastic meal here at The Lorne. Place is constantly busy due to the quality of the food on offer. Service was top notch, atmosphere was perfect. Price is around £30 per person for 2-courses and a drink, which is very affordable.

Four of us went to The Lorne early Friday evening. It was a last minute booking as we were in Dunoon for a few days and had no idea where to go to! As soon as we walked through the door we were made welcome! The staff were just wonderful as was the food! Outstanding! Can't praise them highly enough...thank you very much. Sally and Tom Walters.

Slight mistake with the order, and only one dog friendly table (in the bar area). Was nice enough and would visit again, but pre book if you're bringing Fido!

Myself and my wife popped in on Tuesday 3rd Sept, I ordered a prawn cocktail which to be fair was more shrimp than prawn , i ordered sirloin and my wife ordered the haggis, both meals came in good time ,chef even whisked up a peppercorn sauce for me without any hint of onion or garlic. My wife managed the chocolate fudge cake with ice cream.Everything was delicious, the service was first class, we would have liked to have stayed a bit longer as the atmosphere was a good vibe.

Unfortunately it's a hit and miss with the prawn linguini as they are either a decent amount of prawns or something like spot the random prawn. I usually have this dish everytime but I will note that for the price you will need it to have a decent amount of prawns for the price.. obviously I will raise my concerns at my next visit as the food is very good and outstanding service and dedicated quality of food presented... just need consistency I think in the quality of quantity but the flavour is always very good..
