Roman Theatre of Teramo

Sightseeing attraction | Teramo | Abruzzi | Italy

The Roman Theater of Teramo, located in the ancient city of Interamnia Praetuttiorum, is an impressive testament to Roman architecture and culture. It is situated right next to the Roman amphitheater, emphasizing the significance of this area for public events in ancient times.

The theater was built in the 1st century BC and could accommodate over 3,000 spectators. The Cavea, the semi-circular seating area, had a diameter of about 78 meters, while the Orchestra, the area in front of the stage, measured 24 meters in diameter.

Over the centuries, the theater fell into oblivion and was partially covered by modern buildings. It was only through archaeological excavations that parts of the original structure were brought to light. Today, particularly the external arches and the eastern section of the stage are visible. The ruins offer a fascinating insight into Roman architecture and the cultural importance of Teramo in ancient times.

There are currently efforts to restore the theater and make it accessible to visitors. With financial support from the Interinstitutional Development Agreement, comprehensive restoration work will be carried out to preserve this valuable cultural heritage and make it accessible to the public.

A visit to the Roman Theater of Teramo allows you to immerse yourself in the history of the region and appreciate the architectural achievements of the Romans. It is a significant cultural heritage that reflects the rich past of the city.
