Sightseeing attraction | Legnano | Lombardia | Italy
The Castello Visconteo di Legnano, also known as Castello di San Giorgio, is a medieval fortress located in Legnano, Lombardy. It was built in the 13th century by the Torriani family on a natural island in the Olona River. After the defeat of the Torriani by the Visconti in 1277, the castle passed into the possession of the Visconti and remained there until 1437, when it was acquired by the Lampugnani family. In the late 18th century, the Marquises Cornaggia acquired the castle, which was later converted into an agricultural estate. In 1973, it was taken over and restored by the city of Legnano.
Over the centuries, the Castello Visconteo di Legnano underwent numerous structural changes. Archaeological excavations have revealed the existence of a place of worship from the 9th or 10th century, as well as a necropolis from the 6th to the 15th century. Today, the castle is a symbol of the city of Legnano and an important example of medieval military architecture in Lombardy.
