Arengario

Museum | Monza | Lombardia | Italy

The Arengario in Monza is a historic building that serves as a palace for the city administration and as an exhibition space. It was built in the late 13th century, inspired by the Palazzo della Ragione in Milan, and was the seat of the most important magistrates of the city of Monza for a long time. The building has a longitudinal layout and includes an open arcade floor and a large upper hall supported by rectangular columns.

Particularly noteworthy is the massive medieval tower structure added to the north side of the building to compensate for the missing bell tower structure of the Monza Cathedral. Over the centuries, the Arengario has been restored and renovated multiple times, with the 20th century being particularly influential as the large upper hall was used for exhibitions and cultural events.

The historical significance of the Arengario is reflected in its architecture, which features Gothic arcades, brick masonry, and pointed arch windows. Various architectural additions have been made over the years, including the "parlera" in 1380, an area where public decrees were read. Today, the Arengario hosts rotating exhibitions and is used as a cultural venue that attracts both art and history lovers.

The palace is located near the historic Piazza del Mercato and plays a central role in the cultural life of Monza. As a public building, it is accessible and regularly used for events and exhibitions.
