Museums in Morbegno
Lombardia, Italy
Morbegno, a picturesque town in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy, Italy, offers visitors a range of attractions that provide insight into the local history and culture.
Civic Museum of Natural History of Morbegno
This natural history museum is located in the 18th century Gualteroni building in the historic center of Morbegno. It was founded in 1974 to spread knowledge about the natural aspects of the region, thanks to the donation of numerous mineral finds by Giacomo Perego. The museum is divided into two main areas:
Earth Sciences: Various geological exhibits are presented here, illustrating the geological diversity of the region.
Wildlife: This section is dedicated to the animals native to the Morbegno area. Particularly interesting are the large dioramas depicting local natural environments - the forest, the mountains, and the valley.
Another highlight are the smaller dioramas showcasing the camouflage abilities of the ptarmigan, the snowshoe hare, and the ermine, as well as providing a cross-section of countryside nightlife.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm and on Sundays from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. It is located at Via Cortivacci 2, next to the Morbegno municipal library.
Palazzo Malacrida
This historic building is an outstanding example of the Rococo style in the Valtellina. Particularly noteworthy are the ballroom on the first floor and the frescoes adorning the walls of the palace. Palazzo Malacrida is located in the upper town of Morbegno and is a must-see for art and architecture enthusiasts.
Although Morbegno does not host a variety of museums, these attractions offer a unique insight into the history and culture of the region. The combination of historical buildings and natural exhibitions make Morbegno a worthwhile destination for culturally inclined visitors.
