Museums in Montefoscoli

Tuscany, Italy

Montefoscoli, a picturesque village in Tuscany, Italy, is home to the Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Montefoscoli, a museum dedicated to rural traditions and life of the past.

Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Montefoscoli

This museum is located in a historic building originally constructed around 1000 BC and later used as a monastery. In 1508, the noble family Vaccà Berlighieri acquired the property and transformed it into a farmhouse. Today, it is used by the "Comitato di Promozione Culturale di Montefoscoli" and houses the museum.

Highlights of the museum:

Historical rooms: The exhibition spaces are located in the former working areas of the farmhouse and have been preserved to maintain their original appearance. Particularly noteworthy are the original tiles in the "Coppaio" and the barrels in the wine cellar.

Medical collection: In the upper rooms of the building, once belonging to the Vaccà Berlighieri family, there are collections of manuscripts, medical treatises, and ancient medical instruments that offer a fascinating insight into the medical history of the region.

Hidden spaces: The museum also houses secret rooms, tunnels, and medieval barns that transport visitors back in time and bring the history of the building to life.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Montefoscoli provides a deep insight into rural life of the past and is a must-see for visitors interested in the history and culture of Tuscany.
