Presepe vivente

Museum | Pisa | Tuscany | Italy

In Pisa and the surrounding region, the tradition of "Presepe Vivente" is widespread. This living representation of the birth of Jesus is performed in several communities in the area and attracts numerous visitors.

San Piero a Grado:

In San Piero a Grado, a district of Pisa, the "Presepe Vivente" traditionally takes place on the evening of December 24th and the afternoon of December 26th. The event includes about 200 actors and spans various stations, including the census of Herod, artisan workshops such as a blacksmith and bakery, as well as the depiction of Herod's palace and the birth of Jesus in the manger. Visitors can participate in the "customs station" to receive special coins that can be exchanged for traditional foods and drinks at the different stalls.

Badia di San Savino:

In Badia di San Savino, between Pisa and Cascina, the "Presepe Vivente" is performed on January 7th. Over a hundred actors in historical costumes reconstruct the Nativity scene, starting with Herod's census and culminating in the arrival of the Three Wise Men. The village lives the tradition intensely, with the decorations, sets, and costumes entirely designed and made by the community.

Casciana Terme:

In Casciana Terme, a picturesque town nestled among the hills of Pisa, the "Presepe Vivente" takes place on December 17th. The event reconstructs the daily life of a historical village, including the homes of Mary and Joseph at the time of the Annunciation. The path is illuminated by candles and torches, creating a particularly atmospheric ambiance.

Castelfranco di Sotto:

In Castelfranco di Sotto, the "Presepe Vivente" begins on December 23rd with a procession of over a hundred actors, dancers, and jugglers. Scenes from Palestine two thousand years ago are recreated, including the depiction of shepherds, prophets, Roman soldiers, as well as markets and artisan workshops.

San Miniato Basso:

The "Presepe Vivente" in San Miniato Basso, with over 300 actors, is one of the most impressive in Tuscany. It takes place on December 26th and January 6th. After a procession through the village, once known as "Pinocchio", scenes of the anticipation and birth of Jesus near the churches of the Holy Martyrs Martin and Stephen, as well as the Transfiguration of Christ, are vividly portrayed.

These living nativity plays offer a unique insight into the traditions and cultural heritage of the region and are a highlight of the Christmas season in the vicinity of Pisa.
