It is a prominent gate located in the historic center of Ferrara, which was once part of the medieval city walls. The name "Volto del Cavallo" means "Horse Arch" and refers to the unique shape of the arch adorning the gate, as well as the significance of the horse in the city's history.

The gate was built in the 12th century as part of the expansion and fortification of the city walls of Ferrara. As one of the many city gates that protected Ferrara in the Middle Ages, the Volto del Cavallo had both a practical and symbolic meaning. It served as an entry point to the city and was a strategic point in the defense against potential attackers. The city walls of Ferrara were known for their impressive strength, and the gate was a crucial part of these defenses.

Architecturally, the Volto del Cavallo is an outstanding example of the Gothic style of the time. The arch of the gate is tall and pointed, typical of Gothic architecture, and is flanked by massive stone columns. The arch is adorned with intricate decorations that served both functional and aesthetic purposes. The facade of the gate is made of sturdy stone, giving it a monumental yet elegant appearance. Particularly striking is the relief of a horse above the gate, serving as a reminder of the gate's name and as a symbol of the horse's importance in medieval life and the military history of the region.

Over the centuries, the Volto del Cavallo has undergone various changes, but its original character and symbolic significance as a gateway to the city have remained intact. The gate is now a fascinating relic of Ferrara's medieval urban planning and a popular attraction for tourists looking to explore the city's history and architecture. It is a perfect example of the historical importance of city fortifications and gates, which in the past provided both protection and access to the city.

In addition to its historical significance, the Volto del Cavallo is also a cultural symbol of the city of Ferrara. It is part of the historic cityscape, recalling a time when fortresses and walls played a central role in the city's life. The gate is also a prominent point in the old town, harmonizing with the surrounding buildings and squares, emphasizing the historical structure of Ferrara.
