Museo Don Carlo Villa, Rossino di Calolziocorte
Museum | Calolziocorte | Lombardia | Italy
The Museo Don Carlo Villa is located in an 18th century building behind the new Church of San Lorenzo in Rossino, a district of Calolziocorte in the province of Lecco, Lombardy, Italy. It was set up to preserve and present the historical and artistic heritage of the parish.
Collection and exhibitions:
The museum spans two floors and houses a remarkable collection of artworks and liturgical items ranging from the 15th to the 20th century. The exhibits come from the parish's holdings, private donations, and finds from the surrounding area that would have otherwise been lost as they were not considered part of "high culture" art.
Outstanding objects include:
Reliquary with the "Holy Thorns": A silver reliquary by Eugenio Bellosio containing a relic of thorns traditionally believed to belong to the French king.
Crucifix for the Jansenism cult: An intricately carved ivory crucifix reflecting the religious style of that time.
Wooden crucifix with movable head and human hair: A unique piece demonstrating the attention to detail and realism of the artistry of the time.
Additionally, there are a number of liturgical vestments, paintings, and other religious artifacts documenting the religious life and popular devotion of the region.
Additional attractions:
In addition to the museum, visitors can explore the nearby Church of San Lorenzo Novo, featuring a neoclassical facade and interiors from the 18th and 19th centuries. Particularly notable is the altarpiece "The Translation of the Body of Saint Catherine of Alexandria" by Giovan Battista and Giovan Paolo Recchi. In the church's sacristy, there is the painting "Immaculate Conception" by Carlo Ceresa.
Another highlight is the nearby Church of San Lorenzo Vecchio, founded in the 5th century and housing significant frescoes from the 15th century, including depictions of the crucifixion, the blessing Christ, and the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence.
The Museo Don Carlo Villa thus offers a deep insight into the religious art and history of the region and is a significant cultural heritage of Calolziocorte.
