Casa Natale Papa Pio XI

Museum | Desio | Lombardia | Italy

The "Casa Natale di Papa Pio XI" in Desio, Lombardy, is the birthplace of Achille Ratti, who served as Pope Pius XI from 1922 to 1939. Born on May 31, 1857, Ratti grew up in this building, which was originally used as a silk mill. After his election as Pope, he had the building purchased from the Gavazzi family and converted into an orphanage, which was opened in 1925 as the "Orfanotrofio Pio XI". This orphanage operated until 1971, providing support to needy children.

Today, the building houses the "Museo Papa Pio XI", dedicated to the life and work of the Pope. The first floor of the house displays numerous memorabilia, including personal items of Pius XI and documents from his time as Pope. A special highlight is a radio set personally made by Guglielmo Marconi in 1931, illustrating the close connection between Pius XI and the technological advancements of that time.

The museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the life of Pius XI and his significant role in the history of the Catholic Church. It is a place of remembrance and learning, highlighting the connection between Desio and the Vatican, as well as the social initiatives of the Pope.
