Castello Bolleris
Museum | Roccasparvera | Piemonte | Italy
The "Castello Bolleris" in Roccasparvera, Piedmont, is a historic fortress built in the 11th century. It is located on a prominent hill behind the village and served as a strategic checkpoint for travelers on the ancient Roman military road and the Via Galliarum leading to France. The castle was a symbol of the power of the Bolleris family, who ruled the region from 1356 to 1629.
History and significance:
Over the centuries, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times as it was often at the center of conflicts between Spain and France. In 1559, it was finally destroyed by the troops from Cuneo under the leadership of Grasso and Della Chiesa as Roccasparvera transitioned from French rule to Savoyard territory.
Architectural features:
Today, only ruins of the castle remain, including the impressive Porta Bolleris, the only remnant of the once powerful city walls. Nearby, there is also a network of underground tunnels that were used as escape routes or for water supply, allowing underground access to the River Stura di Demonte.
Activities and events:
In the vicinity of the castle, there is the "Sentiero Bolleris," a themed hiking trail that brings to life the history and legends surrounding the castle and the Bolleris family. The trail is about 2 kilometers long and is especially suitable for families and history enthusiasts.
The "Castello Bolleris" is a significant cultural heritage of the region, offering visitors a fascinating insight into the medieval history of Piedmont.
