LUMEN - Museum of Mountain Photography

Museum | Riscone | Trentino-Alto Adige | Italy

The LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography is a unique museum entirely dedicated to mountain photography. Located on the summit of Kronplatz in South Tyrol, it spans four floors with a total area of 1,800 square meters. The museum was opened in 2018 and offers a comprehensive insight into the history and art of mountain photography from its origins to the present day.

Collections and Exhibitions

The museum showcases a variety of photographs that capture the fascination of mountains from different perspectives. Permanent exhibitions include:

Room of Mirrors: Visitors can view rare artifacts from the world of mountain photography, while the mirror room offers an artistic and poetic exploration of the specific atmosphere of the mountains.

Pixel Storm: This exhibition explains the technical aspects of photography, particularly the workings of modern camera sensors and the conversion of light into digital images.

Mountain Mania: With the invention of the postcard in the late 19th century, mountain marketing was taken to the next level. Mountain motifs, depicted in the tradition of landscape painting, became popular and brought the mountains closer to people.

In addition to these permanent exhibitions, the museum also offers changing special exhibitions that illuminate various aspects of mountain photography and related themes.

Architecture and Location

The LUMEN Museum is located in a modernized building of the former mountain station of the Kronplatz cable car at 2,275 meters above sea level. The museum's architecture harmoniously blends into the surrounding mountain landscape, offering visitors a spectacular panoramic view of the Dolomites.

Events and Dining

The museum serves not only as an exhibition space but also as a venue for various events, workshops, and seminars. A special highlight is the AlpiNN Food Space & Restaurant, run by the renowned Michelin-starred chef Norbert Niederkofler, offering guests culinary delights with a breathtaking view of the mountain world.

The LUMEN Museum is thus a significant cultural center that makes the fascination of mountains tangible through the lens of photography and contributes uniquely to mountain culture.

É stato davvero un'esperienza piacevole, ricca di effetti speciali e incantevoli, allo stesso tempo di stile misto moderno con aspetti antichi. La consiglio a tutti.

Spectacular museum with alot of interactivity and dynamism, a must visit for photography lovers. The museum blends history, art, and technical photography, with modern technology to present unique interessing rooms. We were particularly impressed with the mirror room, rush photo room and the eye/platform room. No matter your age or interests, you are unlikely to get bored while visiting this museum.
