"Recognizing the Walls" is a permanent exhibition in Lucca dedicated to the history and importance of the city walls. The exhibition is located in the basement of Baluardo Santa Croce, one of the most prominent bastions of the city fortifications. Access is through Via delle Conce, below the Casermetta Santa Croce.
The exhibition provides a detailed insight into the origins and development of the Lucca city walls, built in the 16th century. Through a combination of images, texts, and interactive elements, visitors are introduced to the history of this significant structure. A central element is the "Striscia del Tempo", an installation highlighting important historical events and dates.
Inside Baluardo Santa Croce, there is also a projection illustrating the complex process of daily opening and closing of the city gates during the Republic of Lucca. This audiovisual representation gives a vivid impression of the historical daily life and military protocols of the city.
The exhibition "Recognizing the Walls" is a significant contribution to the preservation and dissemination of Lucca's cultural heritage, offering both locals and visitors the opportunity to experience the history of the city walls in a tangible way.
