Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Campli

Museum | Campli | Abruzzi | Italy

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Campli is located in the historic center of Campli, Abruzzo, Italy, and is dedicated to the rich archaeological heritage of the region. It was opened in 1988 and is housed in a former 13th-century Franciscan monastery. The entrance is through a portico adorned with remarkable two-arched windows and a polylobed portal that once led to the chapter house.

Collection and Exhibitions:

The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts mainly from the nearby necropolis of Campovalano. This necropolis was excavated for over forty years and includes 610 burials from the Iron Age and Romanization period, dating from the 9th to the 3rd century BC.

The exhibitions are divided into three main halls, containing over 30 showcases with objects from the grave goods of the burials. A didactic area displays the evolution of burial rituals. The oldest burial monuments consist of large mounds with stone circles and offerings such as weapons, bronze household items, and even war or ceremonial chariots for male burials. Female burials often contain bronze fibulae as well as jewelry made of amber and glass. Over time, the richness of the offerings decreases, reflecting the transition to classical Roman culture.

Significance:

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Campli provides a deep insight into the prehistoric and early historical development of Abruzzo, especially the Piceni. It allows visitors to understand and appreciate the cultural practices and daily life of ancient communities.
