Polo Museale Civico: Museo Archeologico Torrione "La Rocca"

Museum | Giulianova | Abruzzi | Italy

The Museo Archeologico Torrione "La Rocca" in Giulianova, Italy, is located in a historic watchtower that was once part of the medieval city fortifications. This tower, which gives its name to the district of "La Rocca," was built in the 15th century and served as a strategic defense structure. Today, it houses the archaeological department of the Polo Museale Civico and presents finds from the Roman city of Castrum Novum Piceni, founded around 290 BC.

The exhibition includes a variety of artifacts, including amphorae, ceramics, and various objects from tombs. Of particular note are the intricately decorated oil lamps, which were produced in Castrum and reached remote parts of the Roman Empire through the city's port. These finds offer a fascinating insight into the daily life and trade activities of the ancient city.

The watchtower itself is a remarkable example of Renaissance military architecture. It was built with a combination of stone and bricks and features characteristic elements such as a wide base and sloping walls designed to deflect enemy projectiles. Inside the tower are two circular rooms with different vaulting techniques: the lower one with a ribbed construction and the upper one with a dome.

The museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history of Giulianova and the development of the region. It is a significant cultural site that appeals to both history enthusiasts and architecture lovers.
