View towards Cella from the Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto

The Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto, also known as Pieve di Gorto, is a historic church located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Italy. It is situated between the hamlets of Cella and Agrons in the municipality of Ovaro, Udine province. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

History

The origins of the Pieve di Gorto date back to early Christian times. A first basilica-like building was constructed between the 4th and 6th centuries AD near the present-day church of San Martino in Ovaro. After the destruction of this early complex, the Pieve was built on its current site on a hill that was considered safer. The church was first mentioned in writing in 1119, when it was placed under the Abbey of Moggio. During the Middle Ages, the Pieve di Gorto was the only parish in the valley and covered a large area, including the present-day municipalities of Ovaro, Comeglians, Prato Carnico, Rigolato, Forni Avoltri, Sappada, Ravascletto, and Cercivento. Over time, separate parishes were established in these communities.

Architecture

The current structure of the church dates back to the 18th century, with clear traces of earlier construction phases still visible. The Pieve is a three-nave basilica with a square presbytery flanked by two sacristies. The interior is simple, emphasizing the spiritual atmosphere. The bell tower, dominating the architectural ensemble, is particularly noteworthy.

Cultural significance

The Pieve di Gorto was not only a religious center but also a social and economic hub. Traditionally, pastoral care was provided by three vicars residing in different hamlets. The community played an active role in choosing these clergy and in managing church affairs. Additionally, two brotherhoods existed, serving both religious and economic purposes by providing loans and social support.

Pieve Museum

The "Museo della Pieve di Gorto" has been established in the former dairy of the village. This small but valuable museum offers archaeological, historical, artistic, and religious insights into the history of the Pieve. Exhibits include medieval relic ampoules, ancient coins, early medieval artifacts, and baroque wooden sculptures from the Carnic carving school.

The Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto is thus a significant testament to the religious and cultural history of Val Degano, providing visitors with a deep insight into the region's development from ancient times to the present.
