The "Museo Archeologico e Naturalistico di Tarcento" is located in the Palazzo Frangipane, a historic building from the 16th to 18th century that is now owned by the municipality. The museum presents a diverse collection that encompasses the geological and biological history of the region as well as the development of humans from their earliest ancestors to the Lombard period.
Geological and biological collections:
Fauna and minerals: On the ground floor, exhibits of the local wildlife are displayed, including shells from the Mediterranean and a significant collection of crabs from the Tuscan Archipelago. Additionally, there is a showcase of minerals showing remarkable crystal examples.
Fossils: On the upper floor, there is one of the most significant collections of trilobites in Europe, complemented by fossils of ammonites and various marine and terrestrial reptiles such as plesiosaurs, mosasaurs, and dinosaurs. These exhibits are arranged chronologically and evolutionarily from the Cambrian to the Oligocene.
Archaeological collections:
The museum provides insight into human evolution, starting with Pithecanthropus up to the Lombard period. There is a section representing the territory from Grado to Ugovizza, highlighting the oldest rock formations in Friuli.
Special exhibitions:
Trilobites: One of the most significant collections in Italy showcasing the diversity and evolution of these prehistoric arthropods.
Cephalopods: A collection of fossils from this group, which is currently being expanded.
Speleology: A section dedicated to cave exploration, with information and exhibits on this topic.
