Museo Diocesano di Pavia

Museum | Pavia | Lombardia | Italy

The "Museo Diocesano di Pavia" is a significant museum dedicated to the art and history of the Diocese of Pavia. Located in the heart of the city, right next to the Pavia Cathedral, it provides a deep insight into the religious and cultural heritage of the region.

History and Architecture

The museum was founded in 2023 by the Diocese of Pavia to preserve and make accessible the artistic treasures of the diocese. It is housed in the spaces of the former crypt of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Popolo, built in the 11th century and demolished in the 15th century in favor of the current cathedral. The remaining parts of the crypt were restored and integrated into the museum, creating a unique connection between history and the present.

Collections and Exhibitions

The museum's collection includes a variety of liturgical objects, sculptures, and paintings reflecting the religious art of the region. Outstanding exhibits include:

The "Riccio di pastorale": An intricately carved, painted, and gilded elephant ivory Riccio from the late 12th century, made by a Sicilian workshop under the hand of Arab craftsmen.

The "Lunetta del Fasolo": A large painting by Lorenzo Fasolo depicting the Madonna della Misericordia, originally serving as the crown of a polyptych.

An illuminated choir book: A beautifully decorated choir book from the late 15th century, highlighting the importance of music in the liturgical life of the diocese.

These and other works provide a comprehensive insight into the religious art and history of the Diocese of Pavia.

The museum regularly organizes exhibitions and events focusing on various aspects of religious art and history. These include temporary exhibitions, lectures, and workshops accessible to both professionals and the general public.
