Casa Alciati

Museum | Vercelli | Piemonte | Italy

The Casa Alciati in Vercelli is an outstanding example of 16th century Renaissance architecture and today houses a significant part of the Museo Leone. This museum, founded in 1910, is named after the notary and collector Camillo Leone and spans several historic buildings, including the Casa Alciati, the Palazzo Langosco, and a connecting wing from 1939.

The Casa Alciati is impressive with one of the most important fresco cycles of the early 16th century in Piedmont. The wall paintings, depicting mythological, historical, and religious themes, were likely created by several artists and show influences from Roman antiquity as well as the works of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Baldassarre Peruzzi, and Raphael Sanzio. The frescoes were rediscovered during renovations in the 1930s and are now a highlight of the museum visit.

In addition to the frescoes, the Casa Alciati also houses a collection of artworks and artifacts reflecting the history and culture of the region. This includes paintings, sculptures, and decorative artworks providing insight into the artistic development of Piedmont from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The rooms of the Casa Alciati are carefully restored, offering an authentic atmosphere that brings visitors closer to the life and aesthetics of the Renaissance.

The connection of the Casa Alciati with the neighboring Palazzo Langosco and the modern connecting wing allows visitors to experience different eras and styles within the museum. The Palazzo Langosco, a Baroque building from the 17th century, complements the collection with further artworks and historical objects, while the 20th century connecting wing serves as a bridge between the historic buildings and provides additional exhibition spaces.

Overall, within the Museo Leone, the Casa Alciati offers a comprehensive insight into the art and cultural history of Vercelli and Piedmont. The combination of Renaissance frescoes, historical artifacts, and architecture from different periods makes the museum a significant cultural center in the region.
