Cimitero ebraico di Vercelli

Museum | Vercelli | Piemonte | Italy

The Jewish cemetery of Vercelli, officially known as "Cimitero Ebraico di Vercelli", was founded in 1801 and is located outside the city center, in accordance with Napoleonic regulations. The cemetery houses over a thousand graves, which exhibit a diverse architectural design. Older graves are simple and show the signs of time, while later graves feature monumental family chapels and artistic decorations that reflect the influence of the non-Jewish society.

Among the notable tombs are those of Rabbi Giuseppe Rafael Levi, as well as graves designed by prominent Vercellese sculptors such as Bistolfi, Porzio, Sereno, Gariboldi, and Gartmann. A distinctive feature of the cemetery is the Mortuary Temple, built in the late 19th century, which serves as a mortuary.

The cemetery is a significant testament to the Jewish history and culture in Vercelli, offering a deep insight into the traditions and heritage of the city's Jewish community.
