Museum | Teramo | Abruzzi | Italy
The medieval walls of Teramo are a significant historical heritage of the city, bearing witness to its medieval past. Originally built in the 11th century, the city walls stretched for about four kilometers and were interrupted by various gates that allowed access to the city.
Over the centuries, the walls were expanded and strengthened multiple times to meet changing military requirements. Today, only some sections of the original walls remain, providing a valuable insight into the medieval city structure and defense systems.
One particularly noteworthy section is the Borgo Medioevale di Teramo, located outside the ancient city walls on the hill of San Venanzio. This medieval district, running along Via del Castello and Via Giovanna d'Arco, was built in the 13th century and still preserves many of its original structures and alleyways.
Another interesting feature of the city is Piazza Martiri della Libertà, surrounded by the remains of the Roman amphitheater. This square, forming the historical center of Teramo, is a lively meeting point and a testament to the city's long history.
The medieval walls and the adjacent historical districts of Teramo are now important landmarks, offering visitors the opportunity to delve into the rich history of the city and admire its medieval architecture.
