National Archeological Museum of Ferrara

Museum | Ferrara | Emilia-Romagna | Italy

The National Archaeological Museum of Ferrara is located in the Palazzo Costabili, a Renaissance building designed by Biagio Rossetti for Antonio Costabili, the envoy of Duke Ludovico Sforza.

Collection and Exhibitions

The museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts from the Etruscan city of Spina, which flourished between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. The exhibits are divided into two main areas:

Ground floor: Here, finds from the city of Spina and its daily life are presented. A special section is dedicated to the religious life of the city, documented by epigraphic evidence. In addition, two built-in boats from the 3rd to 4th centuries BC from the Isola Valley are on display.

Upper floor: This area showcases finds from the city's necropolis, including kraters, amphorae, and other ceramics made by Attic artists of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. These works illustrate the cultural connections between Spina and Greece. Additionally, jewelry made of gold, silver, amber, and semi-precious stones crafted by artisans from the Po Valley and central Italy are also on display.

Activities and Events

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum regularly organizes cultural events, including workshops, lectures, and temporary exhibitions focusing on various aspects of the archaeology and history of the region. These activities promote dialogue between science and the public and contribute to the cultural enrichment of the region.

The National Archaeological Museum of Ferrara thus makes a significant contribution to the preservation and dissemination of the cultural heritage of the region and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of the Etruscan city of Spina.
