House of Ludovico Ariosto

Museum | Ferrara | Emilia-Romagna | Italy

The "Casa di Ludovico Ariosto" in Ferrara is the residence of the famous poet, where he spent the last years of his life and completed the final version of his masterpiece "Orlando Furioso." The building, presumably designed by Girolamo da Carpi, features a simple yet elegant brick facade.

History and significance:

In 1526, Ariosto acquired the property and in 1529 moved in with his son Virginio and his lover Alessandra Benucci. Here, he devoted himself to the third and final edition of his epic "Orlando Furioso," which was published in 1532. Ariosto passed away in this house in 1533.

Collection and exhibitions:

On the first floor of the house, there is a small museum dedicated to the poet. The collection includes a bronze cast of his inkwell, various editions of his works, and numerous medals depicting his image, including one found in his grave in 1801. A special exhibit is an 1881 edition of "Orlando Furioso" illustrated by Gustave Doré.

Current use:

Today, the house serves as a cultural center and event venue. The garden behind the building is used for concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events. Since 2018, the house has also been home to the headquarters of the Giorgio Bassani Foundation, dedicated to the life and work of the Ferrara writer of the same name. Visitors can explore Bassani's reconstructed studio, his extensive library, and other artifacts.

Overall, the "Casa di Ludovico Ariosto" provides a deep insight into the life and work of the poet and represents a significant cultural heritage of Ferrara.
