Foro romano

Museum | Zuglio | Friuli-Venezia Giulia | Italy

The Forum Romano di Zuglio in Zuglio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is an important archaeological area that presents the remains of the ancient Roman city of Iulium Carnicum. This city was probably founded during the proconsulship of Julius Caesar and played a significant role in the region.

The Forum covers an area of about 40 x 85 meters and was the center of public life in Iulium Carnicum. It was surrounded by a portico and housed a temple in the center, which was likely dedicated to Jupiter Capitolinus. On the southern side of the Forum, there was a basilica that served as a courthouse and meeting place.

In addition to the Forum, other Roman buildings have been preserved in Zuglio, including a theater, baths, and houses with mosaics. These discoveries provide a deep insight into the life and architecture of Roman times in this region.

The Museo Archeologico di Zuglio houses numerous artifacts from the excavations, including sculptures, inscriptions, and everyday objects that document the rich cultural heritage of Iulium Carnicum. A visit to the museum and the adjacent Forum allows visitors to experience the history of this ancient city and trace the region's development from Roman times to the medieval period.
