The Valle Lagorara in Maissana, Liguria, is a significant archaeological site that provides a unique insight into the prehistoric use of jasper. In this region, one of the largest known open-air jasper mines was operated between 3500 BC and 2000 BC. The mining areas extend over several hundred meters and are mainly located between the Lagorara river and the western slope of Monte Scogliera at approximately 750 meters above sea level.
Archaeological significance
The discovery of this mining site in 1988 allowed archaeologists to identify two main extraction areas. In addition, two shelters were found on the opposite side of the mining areas, as well as numerous artifacts such as waste flakes, fragments of hammerstones, and remains of objects made of ceramic or steatite. These finds suggest that the extracted jasper raw materials were likely transported to other places to be further processed.
