Mühlenmuseum Aldein
Museum | Aldein | Trentino-Alto Adige | Italy
The mill ensemble in the Thal valley in Aldein is a lively open-air museum that documents the history and technology of water mills in the region. In the 1950s, as a road to Aldein was built, more and more farmers found lucrative work outside the village, leading to the abandonment and gradual decay of the mills and traditional equipment. To preserve this farming tradition, the Aldein Museum Association has dedicated itself to the maintenance and presentation of these historic mills and has restored various mills.
The ensemble includes several mills, such as the Thal mill, the Matzneller mill, a water forge, and a Venetian sawmill. These mills are still in operation today and use water power, just as their ancestors did. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the functioning of the mills and learn more about traditional grain processing and other artisanal techniques.
A special highlight is the mill circular trail, which leads through the valley and past the various mill stations. This trail offers not only insights into historical technology, but also into the natural beauty of the surroundings. The mill circular trail is an experience for the whole family and allows for a vivid discovery of the history of the region.
Therefore, the mill ensemble in the Thal valley is a significant cultural attraction that keeps the history and tradition of water mills in South Tyrol alive and offers visitors a deep insight into the local culture and technological history.
