Museo Pons Drusi
Museum | Bolzano | Trentino-Alto Adige | Italy
The Museo Pons Drusi in Bolzano is a small but significant archaeological museum that focuses on the Roman history of the region. It is located in the basement of the Grieserhof senior home on Via Cologna and was discovered during the construction of the home. The excavations uncovered impressive Roman relics, including a richly decorated building with a columned hall and a massive structure, which is believed to be the base of a temple or monument. These findings are among the most important remains of ancient Pons Drusi, the Roman predecessor of Bolzano.
The museum presents a selection of these artifacts, including wall paintings, mosaics, coins, and jewelry, providing insight into the life and culture of the Roman settlement. Particularly notable are the well-preserved wall paintings with various motifs and the remains of a courtyard with a mosaic floor.
The name "Pons Drusi" derives from Nero Claudius Drusus, the adoptive son of Emperor Augustus, who conquered the region during a military campaign and laid the foundation for the settlement. Today, the name of the Drusus Bridge in Bolzano commemorates this Roman past.
The museum is accessible year-round by appointment and offers tours for groups of up to 15 people. It is a valuable place for those who want to learn more about the Roman history of Bolzano.
