The "Casa Museo della Civiltà Contadina" in Sappada, Veneto, Italy, also known as "Puicher s'Kottlars Haus" or "Schtòl", is a significant museum that offers a deep insight into the rural life of the region. The building, a typical example of local wooden architecture, was built in the second quarter of the 19th century and inhabited until the 1980s without significant changes to its structure. In 1990, the municipality of Sappada took over the building, restored it with strict adherence to the principles of conservative restoration, and turned it into a museum.
The museum consists of several areas that illustrate the traditional life of Sappada families:
Kitchen: A room where open fire was used for cooking and heating. Food was often smoked over the fire and hung from the ceiling.
Dining room: A room with wood paneling that retains the warmth of a brick oven heater.
Bedroom: A simply furnished room that reflects the modest living conditions of the time.
Workroom: A small room used as a workshop for handicrafts, equipped with various tools.
The attic is covered with larch wood shingles and houses a small balcony that served as a toilet. Unlike many other Sappada houses, the stables and hayloft are directly integrated into the residential building, highlighting the close connection between living and working areas.
Next to the building is a garden where vegetables and grains that once thrived in the region are grown. This garden provides a practical insight into past agricultural practices.
