The South Tyrol Museum of Nature in Bolzano is the only natural history museum in the province and offers a comprehensive insight into the geology, flora, and fauna of the region. It is located in the historic Maximilianic Government Building, a late Gothic building from the 16th century that once served as the administrative building for Emperor Maximilian I.
Permanent Exhibition
The permanent exhibition spans several floors and covers an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. It is divided into two main areas:
Geology of South Tyrol: This section highlights the geological development of the region, including the formation of the Alps and the Dolomites. Interactive models and dioramas illustrate the geological processes and the diversity of rocks and minerals.
Habitats and ecosystems: Various habitats of South Tyrol are presented here, from alpine highlands to valley floors. Special highlights include the 9,000-liter coral reef aquarium, providing insight into the marine world of the Triassic period around 230 million years ago, as well as a live ant colony and terrariums with native reptiles.
